　　开创九华山佛教局面的是一位来自异域的僧人。唐朝时古朝鲜王子金乔觉遍访中国名山，辗转来到了九华山，起初住在山上的石洞里，或者搭茅棚居住。直到他六十岁左右，山下百姓游玩时，在山洞里发现了这位高僧，于是群策群力，修建了一座寺院，请金乔觉居之。从此九华山就成为金乔觉传经布道的地方，僧众渐多，香火旺盛。唐贞元十年(794)金乔觉九十九岁这一年夏末，他突然召集徒众告别，安然圆寂。
